Do-It-Yourself Drainage Repairs

You may be a garden lover and we all know how messy it is when you find a spot on your garden that collects water and when there are pools of water in your garden. It gets worse when your kids maybe step on them and enter the house with those muddy footprints.

If we are considering some other landscape with such disaster that is not your garden, you may have seen all the safety signs put up around the area. But how long will these signs last? And do you really have no other plans. Not to worry, here I’m going to solve this drainage issue with the following steps.

Step 1

Before you start working on the drainage issues, first we need to have a plan. And to start off with, you need to plan your route as to where you want the drainage to be taken. Do note that this route may not be a straight and convenient line, but it will do the job. Also, the drainage system will have no relation to its effectiveness just because the route is short, the lengthier the root is the more area you reserve for drainage. Keep in mind that the pool of water is created by the water flooding from a certain direction/ you could dig the trench along the flow of water and have it empty at 2 different lower spots. Once your route has been finalized, taking chalk or spray tint mark the route along the garden.

Step 2

Next is to dig up a trench. Dig a slim long ditch around 6/8 inches wide and around 2 ft deep. While you cut or dig in to the turf (the top of soil with grass), put it to one side for future use. Also make sure the depth is steady and that there’s a slope going downwards on the entire route.

Step 3

Once you’re satisfied with the trench and the downward slope, taking a compressing tool compact the soil in the trench. If you don’t have such compact tool, you could always walk on the route with shoes on.

Step 4

Once the compacting is done, next you need to add a gravel layer to the trench. It doesn’t matter what the gravel type, just make sure that it is spread evenly along the entire route.

Step 5

Then you need to position the pipe wrapper on the ditch/ trench. Do make sure that it grasps both edges of the trench route from one end to the other.

Step 6

Then, place the perforated drain on to the trench with its holes facing down. Make sure that the pipe is placed in the midpoint mark of the trench. Then start wrapping the pipe line wrapper around it. This wrapping is done to prevent any soil or mud blocking the holes on the pipes.

Step 7

Then fill the drain with stones on the top. Make sure you don’t change the pipe’s position while doing this and once you have layers the gravel, using the spade compact it.

Step 8

Remember how I told you to keep the turf/ sod somewhere to be used again? Well, once the top gravel layer is done, cover the trench using the sod so the drainage system is covered. This is the best solution to get your backyard drainage problem worked out. Hope for the best.
